ECS 1200-008 Introduction to Engineering and Computer Science - Fall 2011

·         General Information (last update September 15, 2011)

1.      The Lab Facility in the Library (MC 1.204) will be open starting Wednesday 9/14/2011 9 a.m.

2.      The MC 1.204 facility will operate as an “open lab” where ECS 1200 students can meet in study groups, work on their projects (they will do a team project in ECS 1200), get help from the mentors. In terms of ECS 1200 specific help, students may seek advice on the project they are doing or class assignments or general questions about the major. Mentors will be available in the Facility to assist students and let me know if they come up with things that are not suitable for the Lab Facility, or other issues that arise.  The Mentor’s main role is to help ECS 1200 students with the other major-related classes they are taking (e.g., Calculus, programming).

3.      The Lab Facility is open with mentors 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday – Friday, 12 noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday, and 12 noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

4.      ECS 1200 Students must sign in and out when using the Lab Facility. ECS students are encouraged to visit the Lab Facility and get familiar with it.

·         Student Teams

1.      10 teams of 7 students each will be formed to conduct assigned team-projects.

2.      If you would like to create your own team, please, form the team with 7 members and send the name list of the team by e-mail by September 16 to andreaf@utdallas.edu. All team members must be copied in the e-mail to be aware that they part of the team. By not responding to the e-mail in a timely manner, all members are agreeing to be part of a team.

3.      Students who are not part of a team by September 16 will be assigned to a team by the instructor.

4.      Every team will be assigned an official name (Team 1, Team 2, etc.). However, the members of a team are encouraged to identity an additional “unique” name for their team

5.      Members in a team will work together to achieve a common objective (Logo design, Big Egg project). Project scores will be given to the team as a whole.

6.      Conflict of interest: if a member of a team is offering substandard performance to the team, all team members must first try to resolve the conflict internally. If the problem cannot be resolved by the team independently, the instructor must be notified by e-mail (andreaf@utdallas.edu) in a timely manner. All team members must be copied in the e-mail to the instructor, including the member who is providing substandard performance. The e-mail must explain (1) what the conflict problem is about, (2) what actions were taken to solve the problem by the team, (3) why such actions did not resolve the problem.
