ATEC - ONLINE
WORLDS LAB
All students need a recommendation from Monica Evans
Grads:
7390-003 | Undergrads: 4370-006
Meeting
Time: Mondays 3:30-6:15
Description:
The
Online Worlds Lab will develop immersive, multi-participant
environments that support collaborative research, instructional,
and creative projects. There are extensive possibilities for
applied applications in research and education as well as
exploration of the platform as a medium of expression. The
project will take full advantage of the Motion Capture Lab
and provide a practical and dramatic example of its extensive
capabilities. This class also involves collaboration with
students and faculty from The School of Engineering and Computer
Science.
This
interactive media technology lab explores the future of interactive
art and technology through the development of distributed
communities and social networks. A diversity of spaces may
examined including the emerging social spaces in online worlds.
Most importantly, new kinds of virtual interactions and their
possibilities for cultural expression can be explored. The
idea of the role of the creator / author / director / developer
will be re-imagined as a designer of the nature of communication
and interaction. The challenge is to structure what happens
between people in meta spaces, and to design such spaces so
that they are engaging and meaningful.
Students
will work multi-disciplinary teams to develop experimental,
forward looking multi-participant online spaces.
