Welcome to the Design and Optimization of Energy Systems (DOES) Laboratory. The DOES Lab is directed by Dr. Jie Zhang, Associate Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (Affiliated) at The University of Texas at Dallas. We conduct research in sustainable energy systems, which supports the modernization of the electricity infrastructure and the transition of the electricity industry to a paradigm based on high penetrations of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. We inspire and grow the next generation of engineers and scientists, employing a wide variety of computational and experimental methods to address scientific questions associated with the modeling, design, and optimization of complex energy systems.

04/2024: Three papers were accepted by the Kansas Power & Energy Conference 2024.

03/2024: One paper was accepted by the 2024 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting.
03/2024: Dr. Zhang received the award of Federal Research Innovation and ExpeNditures Dynamo (FRIEND) of the Office of Research and Innovation.
03/2024: Dr. Zhang was appointed as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Mechanical Design.

10/2023: Our paper titled “Towards Sustainable Integration: Techno-Economic Analysis and Future Perspectives of Co-located Wind and Hydrogen Energy Systems” was accepted to Journal of Mechanical Design.
09/2023: Our paper titled “Design, Modeling and Simulation of Nuclear-Powered Integrated Energy Systems With Cascaded Heating Applications” was accepted to Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy and selected as a Featured Article and Scilight.
06/2023: DOES received a grant from the WindSTAR (NSF IUCRC) on “Machine Learning-enabled Condition Monitoring of Wind Turbines Using High-Resolution Voltage and Current Signals”.
06/2023: Our paper titled “Modeling and Control of Nuclear-Renewable Integrated Energy Systems: Dynamic System Model for Green Electricity and Hydrogen Production” was accepted to Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy and selected as a Featured Article and Scilight.
