Students

Mentorship

Dr. Khan graduated total of 21 PhD students in his academic career at UT Dallas. Last 3 years, he graduated 6 PhD students. All of his students are well-placed in academia and industries such as Clemson University, Google, Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft (Data Scientist), Raytheon (Research) and Salesforce. Student Support: Sustained Ph.D. students supported, as reflected by external funding, scholarships, gifts: He served or serves as the PI/Co-PI/Senior Personnel of many research projects totaling over $20M. His research work has been supported by federal agencies such as NSF, NASA, DoE, AFOSR, Army and by industry such as NOKIA, Cisco, HPE, Raytheon and TI for various research projects. Currently, more than 9 PhD students are working under his supervision. Most of them are supported as RAs.

Dr. Khan has been an outstanding mentor to female and minority students. Several of his past and present PhD students are female. He has also actively participated in Women in Cyber Security (WiCyS) and Women in Data Science (WiDS) conferences. At WiCyS he gave featured presentations on Big Data for Security both in 2016 and 2017 and for this work he will be getting a major award from IEEE in May 2019. With respect to WiDS, Dr. Khan is UTD’s Ambassador to Stanford University and was the head of the conference at UTD in 2018 and 2019 while the main conference was taking place at Stanford. Together with his female PhD student he also organized a three hour event before the Stanford conference so that local DFW female speakers present their work to motivate the students. These efforts have been a huge boost to UTD’s work in cyber security and data science. Dr. Khan has also supervised minority students including those from the African American and LGBTQ communities. He also mentors undergraduate students and gives them projects in BDA. He also makes sure that his students are placed well and are high achievers. Some of his students are now tenured full professors at universities (e.g., Clemson) and also have positions in Silicon Valley Companies (as mentioned earlier).
