The action of a drug at its receptor produces a response that is proportional to the log of the dose administered. Log-dose response curves are generally plotted against the percent maximal response as shown in this figure. Dose-response curves can shift left or right as a result of reverse tolerance or normal tolerance, respectively. This would also alter the effective dose 50% (ED50) for that drug. If a drug cannot induce a full response it is a partial agonist.
